The Weekend in Music

Long time District music fans may a band called “Of a Revolution” formed in 1996 in Rockville. Puzzled?

Know colloquially as “O.A.R.,” the group has sold out The Anthem this Saturday, Dec. 16. Get a start on the weekend by listening to their 2016 compilation, “XX.” After all, “How many times can I break till I shatter?”

Unable to get in the door at the Anthem? There are still tickets at its older sibling, The 9:30 Club, for Angel Olsen on Friday, Dec. 15. Her haunting, breathy delivery grabs attention with despairing authenticity. Watch the crowd back her on “Shut Up Kiss Me.”

If you’re in a bluesy mood, grab a Lyft up to The Rock-n-Roll Hotel to catch The Virginia Southpaws on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Hailing from just across the Potomac, the group’s two guitar attack on “The Hound” brings to mind the Allman Brothers combined with a douse of Cream. The ghost of Robert Johnson will also be haunting the stage.

Roots music lovers should give their fingers some exercise and grab tickets for Greensky Bluegrass’s two-night stand in February. The band will play the 9:30 club on Feb. 2 and then The Anthem on Feb. 3. It is a unique opportunity to hear their unique progressive sound in two distinctly different environments.
