Tragedy struck the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) last week when off-duty Officer Jamal Shaw was involved in a fatal vehicle accident in Prince George’s County. Officer Shaw ed MPD in May of 2015 and was assigned to the First District.
Family and friends of Officer Shaw have organized a candlelight vigil for him on Thursday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. The vigil has been scheduled to take place at the First District Substation (500 E St SE).
Jamal Shaw, 27, was riding his motorcycle westbound on Piscataway Road when he was cut off by another driver around 3:30 p.m. Friday April 6.
According to witnesses, a car suddenly changed lanes in front of the officer. As he tried to avoid that vehicle, his motorcycle fell over onto its side. MPD said that as Shaw attempted to maneuver his bike into a ‘lay down’ position he was struck by a car traveling eastbound on Piscataway Road.
The driver who struck the officer stayed on the scene, but police are still trying to identify the driver who changed lanes in front of Shaw.

Due to the expected crowd size at the vigil for Officer Shaw, MPD anticipates some traffic challenges in the immediate area for a brief period of time. Officers will be assigned to assist with traffic control, but there is the potential for inconvenience. Understanding and patience are appreciated as Officer Jamal Shaw is ed.

At 10:41 a.m. Wednesday, there was an assault with a dangerous weapon on the 700 block of H Street NE.
At 3:32 p.m. Wednesday, there was an assault with a dangerous weapon on the 1500 block of First Street SE.
At 4:18 p.m. Wednesday, a man was arrested on the 2000 block of 12th Street SE on charges of Simple Assault.
At 4:27 p.m. Wednesday, two men were arrested on the 1600 block of Constitution Avenue NE on charges of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
At 8:10 p.m. Wednesday, there was a robbery on the 2000 block of C Street NE.
At 9:21 p.m. Wednesday, a woman was arrested on the 200 block of 15th Street SE on charges of Robbery.
Reporting Illegal Activity
Prompt and detailed reporting of suspicious activities helps prevent crime. If a citizen sees suspicious activity, or any activity that seems out of the ordinary, immediately call 911.
When reporting suspicious activity, give an accurate description. Here are some things to include:
- Brief description of the activity;
- Date, time and location of the activity;
- Physical identifiers of anyone you observed;
- Descriptions of vehicles;
- Information about where people involved in suspicious activities may have gone;
- Your name and information.
