The DC Dept of General Services (DGS) will host a virtual community meeting on Eastern Market Metro Plaza (EMMP) Park on Thursday, October 1, 2020 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
DGS completed the first phase of construction of EMMP in early July. The new park and children’s playground are located on Parcel 1, just north of Pennsylvania Ave SE between Eighth and Ninth Streets SE.

The playground will be closed from Monday, Oct. 5 to Friday, Oct. to install a shade structure in the playground area. The structure was part of the original design, but supplies were delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. DGS will also be replacing plantings and 3 new trees that died in the early days of opening. The old trees have already been removed.
The second phase of construction is currently planned to begin in about 3 weeks and will last at least until Spring 2021. During the community meeting, DGS will present the final plan for the remaining sites, which include the site of the Metro station entrance, the median strips and the two closed sliplanes. They will also discuss roadwork that is planned, including the installation of a”tabletop” pedestrian crossing from SE Library to Metro Plaza, sidewalk bumpouts in the 800 and 900 blocks of D Street SE, ans a major reworking of the intersections where South Carolina Avenue meets Ninth Street SE and where it meets Seventh SE.
DGS will present both the final project designs as well as the construction phase planning and phasing at the meeting. DGS will also present ideas and concepts for the public art planned for placement on the plaza. The agency has been engaged in selection for three months, and are down to a shortlist of three submissions.
