We can gather together to Raiford Gaffney, who died July 5 after a short struggle with pancreatic cancer.
A longtime federal worker, Raiford worked to improve her community, most recently as a steadfast member of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6B Southeast Library Task Force. Back in March 31, 2023, Raiford participated in a crucial meeting with Ward Six Councilmember Charles Allen, the meeting that led to opening of the Arthur Capper interim library. Until recently, Raiford served as the taskforce’s vice-chair.
She also volunteered each year for AARP’s free tax-preparation service, operated out of the Southwest library and was an active member of Capitol Hill’s own St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Larry Janezich of Capitol Hill Corner wrote an obituary for Raiford, which you can read here.
There will be a celebration of Gaffney’s life starting 1 p.m. Saturday, August 10 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (301 A St. SE). Atttend in person, or livestream the celebration at https://www.stmarks.net/calendar/2024/08/memorial-service-for-blanche-raiford-gaffney/ . The livestream will begin at 12:50 p.m.
