Commanders Postpone Appearance at Community Meeting

The football team is no longer coming to the February community meeting.

On Feb. 12, Friends of Kingman Park (FOKP) Board President Steve Lao said the representatives from the Washington Commanders Football team will not attend the FOKP Feb. 20 meeting.

“The Commanders have decided to postpone their meeting with FOKP and will not be attending the February 20th FOKP Community Meeting,” Lao wrote in an email to the Hill Rag. “We are working on rescheduling them for a later date to meet with the community and discuss the future of the RFK site.”

“They [the Commanders] mentioned wanting to have the right personnel at the meeting to best answer questions from the community,” Lao said.

The Hill Rag reached out to the Commanders for their comment.

“We remain committed to gathering community input and appreciate the ongoing enthusiasm following a fantastic season,” a Commanders spokesperson replied. “As we carefully review the community’s questions and await the city’s next steps for the RFK site, we will reschedule to a date in the near future.”

The NFL team was expected to discuss community concerns around a stadium on the site. No deal has been reached, but ANC commissioners told a Feb. 4 meeting of FOKP that they had seen a site plan sketched in with possibilities for development.

This story is updating.

Plans are still in place for a Feb. 13 meeting at Eastern High School on the future of RFK hosted by Ward 7 Councimember Wendell Felder with Mayor Muriel Bowser and representatives from Events DC.

The FOKP will still hold their standing meeting on Feb. 20 at St. Benedict the Moor Church (330 21st St. NE). Another meeting on the future of RFK Campus, hosted Feb. 13 by Ward 7 Councilmember Wendell Felder (D) and featuring Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) and Events DC at Eastern High School, is expected to continue as planned.

UPDATE: Feb. 12, 5:15 p.m.: this story was updated to include a comment from the Washington Commanders.
